Student Spotlight #4!
Third-grader Grace B. has some cool plans to raise money for Heart-to-Heart, so I’ll let her tell you about it in her own words:
“I am doing a bake sale at my Dad’s work to earn money for heart to heart. I have not done it yet, but I’m very excited to do it! I am going to sell tons of yummy goodies for 50 cents each. I know my Mom and I are pretty good chefs, and I hope my customers think so, too!”
Great job, Grace!
Keep those stories coming — send them to mpullen@egrps.org to see your great ideas announced on this blog. ![]()

Student Spotlight #3!
Second grader Elizabeth M. is the focus of our next student spotlight. During last year’s Heart-to-Heart competition, she raised money by cooking some tasty treats and then having a bake sale! This year, Elizabeth is planning to do something like this again.
Click here to view the flier that she created to help sell those tasty treats last year. Seeing her work just might inspire you to come up with your own new Heart-to-Heart idea for this year.
Great work, Elizabeth!

Student Spotlight #2!
Second grader Molly F. receives a weekly allowance for doing chores around the house that her parents expect her to do, like setting and clearing the table, putting away her laundry, unloading the silverware from the dishwasher, and feeding the dogs. Molly divides her allowance among three boxes: a Share Box, a Save Box, and a Spend Box. Molly then decides who she wants to give her money to (usually an organization that provides for children who are less fortunate), what she wants to save her money for (right now she’s saving for a Wii) and how she wants to spend her money when her family is out shopping (usually for something her Mom and Dad won’t buy).
During Heart-to-Heart, Molly has chosen to donate to Heart-to-Heart from her Share Box. Thank you, Molly, for reminding us to be giving all the time, not just during Heart-to-Heart!
Whose story will be next? Email yours to mpullen@egrps.org today!

A Humane Society Cat Tale
As you know, one of this year’s Heart-to-Heart charities is the Humane Society. But did you know that our very own principal, Mrs. Kehm, has adopted three cats from the Humane Society? Here’s her story:
“Tipper, Magglio, and Pudge were adopted from the Humane Society shelter. These beautiful cats are a joyful addition to our family! Tipper is a sassy tabby with a white tip on her tail. Magglio is a white cat with a tiger tail and her brother Pudge looks like he is ready for a sunny Tiger baseball daytime game with his black grease paint around his eyes. Like the perfect Tiger fan he is, he is suited up in a Tiger uniform. Adopt a pet today!”

Student Spotlight #1!
Thanks to third-grade students Kate D. and Andrew B. for this wonderful example:
To raise money for Heart-to-Heart, Kate and Andrew started a snow-shoveling business. They created a full-page flier and passed it out to some neighbors they already knew well. They’ve already raised $12 for our charities, and with a big snowstorm predicted for tonight, they have hopes of getting even more customers very soon!
What a great example of working hard and coming up with a great idea to help others. If you ask me, doing all of this makes Kate and Andrew both heroes. Wouldn’t you agree?
Now tell your story! Email what you’re doing for Heart-to-Heart to mpullen@egrps.org and your story might appear on this website in the near future.

What Can One Person Do?
As we try to raise money, sometimes you might wonder: How can I, one person, possibly accomplish enough to make a difference in the world?
Your answer just might be found here: www.stservicemovie.com/. Enjoy!

Last Year’s Total Amount Raised
In case you’re wondering, last year the Heart-to-Heart program raised a total of $3,673.64. We donated that money in this manner:
$1500 to the American Cancer Society
$1500 to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation
$673.64 to the Dr. Morse Service Above Self Scholarship
This year, let’s see if we can raise even more money!
In addition to trying to raise lots of money, we’re hoping that as many students as possible will at least donate something. To encourage this, at our final assembly when Heart-to-Heart is done, the class with the highest percentage of students participating will be honored.
As the famous quote says, “No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.” What can YOU do to help others?

More About Our Charities
Would you like to know a little bit more about the charities we’ve chosen to support?
The Greater Grand Rapids chapter of the American Red Cross is helping the people affected by the Indian Village fire — click here to read more about their work.

Pajama Day and Hat Day
Here are two fun events that will help us to raise money for Heart-to-Heart:
On February 1, we’re having Pajama Day, and on February 8, we’re having Hat Day!
How does that raise any money? Well, to wear pajamas or a hat on those special days, you must pay a quarter, and all of the money collected will be given to the Heart-to-Heart charities. With almost 500 Lakeside Lions, we could raise nearly $125 per day just by collecting these quarters!

This Year’s Charities Have Been Chosen!
The 2008 Heart-to-Heart charities have now been selected! The student council had the difficult job of choosing from 24 nominations. The three charities we will be officially supporting are as follows:
1. The Kent County Humane Society
2. The residents of the local Indian Village Condos (where there was recently a severe fire)
3. The Dr. Morse Service Above Self Scholarship
Congratulations to those three charities, and thanks to the student council for your hard work!
